Witkop Foundation, Vets That Matter, American Legion Billie A. Hall Post 17, The American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of The Legion are saddened to hear of the passing of Brian Collum, a hero who helped thousands of veterans with their veteran's benefits. Together, these organizations have started a fundraiser for Brian's family. Brian Collum of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a proud U.S. Army veteran, dedicated Tulsa Police Sergeant, and tireless advocate for his fellow veterans. His life was defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting and helping others.
Following his service in the United States Army, Brian continued his calling to serve by joining the Tulsa Police Department. Over a distinguished career spanning nearly 28 years, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the community he protected. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, Brian retired in February 2024, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, leadership, and dedication to public safety.
Throughout his law enforcement career, Brian was especially recognized for his commitment to traffic safety and his leadership of Operation Safe Shopper, a community safety initiative he established and coordinated for approximately 17 years. During busy shopping periods, including Black Friday, the holiday season, and tax-free weekends, Brian organized highly visible patrols around major retail areas, including Woodland Hills Mall. By deploying officers in patrol vehicles, on bicycles, and on foot, he worked to deter crime, prevent vehicle break-ins, and provide shoppers with greater peace of mind. His expertise and commitment to public safety made him a trusted voice in local news coverage of traffic and community safety issues.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Brian was known for his compassion and willingness to help whenever he saw a need. In one memorable moment in 2014, while serving as a Corporal, he stopped traffic along a busy roadway to safely escort a flock of geese out of danger. This simple act of kindness, captured and shared with the community, reflected the caring spirit that defined his life.
Retirement did not diminish Brian's commitment to service. He devoted his time and experience to assisting fellow veterans through his volunteer work with the Sand Springs Veterans Center and Vets That Matter. Serving as a Veteran Service Officer, Brian helped veterans navigate the often-complicated process of obtaining VA benefits and assistance. His patience, knowledge, and genuine concern for others made a meaningful difference in the lives of those who had served their country.
Brian was the beloved husband of Cristy Smith Collum and father of Grady, Elijah, and Lily. Throughout his life, he demonstrated that service is more than a profession—it is a personal commitment to making the world a better place, one person and one act of kindness at a time.
Brian Collum's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the community he helped protect, and the veterans he so faithfully served. His life exemplified honor, duty, compassion, and selfless service. He will be remembered not only for the uniform he wore, but for the heart with which he served.

The Witkop Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to honoring the sacrifice of veterans, military, and first responders, by recognizing their service and providing value added to their successful transition to civilian life. Our mission is to strengthen the individual through community-based outdoor experiences—using recreation, conservation, and professionally guided expeditions to facilitate personal growth, restore a sense of purpose, and cultivate lasting camaraderie.
